New Year Idea

While scanning a few of my favorite blogs today, I came upon a blogger with a list of accomplishments, failures, favorite things, wishes, etc for the past year and the upcoming year. While reading his very detailed list, I realized that I don't have full recollection of what transpired this last year. Odd, isn't it? I'm not sure if this is a part of my nature, being one of those people that take each day as it comes and one that "goes with the flow", or is it just that I'm getting forgetful in my old age? Alas, I have decided to rectify this situation.

Now, at the same time, I have been considering an activity with my children. You see, currently Tad stays with his grandmother after school until I get home from work, while I pick up Shelby from extended school. Where's the problem? Well, once we all get home alone together, there are almost always conflicts. I think we each need a period of de-stressing. I also want these children of mine to be more thankful and appreciative of what they have, so I think I can kill two birds with one stone. My plan is to start journals. All of us, me, Tad, and Shelby. Once we get home, we'll each go to our own space and write in our journals at least one thing for which we are thankful for that day. Maybe this will help me in remembering while at the same time teach my children thankfulness. Now, I should mention they aren't cretons. They do exhibit manners from time to time and do show their appreciativeness. I just want them to truly comprehend how much we have been blessed as a family. We'll give it a try...let you know how it works!

That's a really great idea!
I once had a teacher friend who got her whole class of students write 5 things every day for which they were thankful. I tried starting it with my students once, but I tend to give up any idea, no matter how good, too soon! But maybe I should try it again with my students. We don't start the new school year until Feb. 2nd so I'd have to keep it in mind all that time......
I hope it works for you!

Maybe they could start blogs as journals???

Love this idea!
Art, as a father of four, let me say that your suggestion is good, but at our house would only lead to more fights over who gets to use the computer first, which would kind of defeat the purpose!

There's a lady online who has a blog for herself and one for each of her kids. It wouldn't be too hard to get the kids to do a quick blog post on these things....
I think it's a great idea, Art.

Stace, I think journaling is an excellent idea. You could allow them to get a bit creative with the journals, too...sort of a journal/scrapbook. Sometimes writing about an object - such as a pretty fallen leaf or a photo - gets the creative juices flowing. Of course, you'll have to allow them to attach the object into their journal (unless one of them decides to write about a dead insect or critter...ugh!). Be sure to allow them to select their own journals. If you follow-through with this, let us know how it goes.

Now, what's with that reference near the end of your first paragraph about your "old age?" Especially after your dig about the photo on my blog (the one I took) being older than you? I know I'm older (I never say "old" - my mother isn't even old yet), but please don't call yourself old yet! And if Art refers to you as his "old lady" or anything like that, slug him! ;-)

Andy's probably right...

And I value my life far too much to ever even think about using the term "old lady" in reference to you all know who.
