Realizations

You know those "Aha" moments? Those times when a new understanding of a situation, passages of a book, even new understandings regarding people, we all have them from time to time. Well, I had one of those "AHA" moments the other day. It happened in the middle of my husband's sermon Sunday morning. Now, a little background, my husband is not a licensed minister, he is, however, a certified lay speaker within the United Methodist Church. This means he can be called to fill in for a pastor whenever the need arises. An opportunity recently presented itself, and he is now filling in a couple of times a month for another pastor. So, while he's in the middle of delivering his sermon, it hits me.... my husband is a preacher. He has a calling. I don't know when he'll officially go thru the entire process of becoming a minister, but at some point in the future, I can see it. He may only become a local pastor, do the course of study work and forgo the M.Div degree, or he may even attend seminary. I'm not psychic, but I know that at some point, he will be a professional minister. Then the second "AHA" moment...he's good at this. Not that I was surprised really, because he's one of those types of people that whatever he attempts to do, he succeeds at...normally, I hate those kinds of people, but in his case, I make the exception. But he was exceptionally good, then it hit me.. O GOD, I'm a preacher's wife! Not something I feel that I'm either qualified or righteous enough for. I think back to all the minister's wives I've known and I in no way could even be in their league. I suppose that's something I'm going to have to work on...

Awwww... Thank you. Your so sweet. I love you! And you are very qualified to be a pastor's wife and probably more 'righteous' than most (or most pastors for that matter).

i was leading a worship service back in january where i was up in front of a bunch of old friends who know me differently than the pastor role i am now. one of those friends leaned over to my fiance and asked "does it weird you out to see him up there like this." to this she just replied, "no, this is who he is." for her, that is it all, for me, that is all. for some of those in my past, i guess it still is a bit of getting used too.

Gavin's comment brings to mind one my ever present fears: I'm going to be at a church service or function of some kind, probably in a leadership role, and someone will come uo to me and say, "Hey I know you. I remember when you..."

Preachers wives come in all shapes, sizes and styles.

There was a time when a preachers wife was essentially an unpaid associate pastor and there are plenty of churches that still expect this.

Just love your husband and you will be a great clergy spouse.

Gavin, Conrad...thanks for the encouraging words...

Honey....thanks for the pep talk..and surely you don't fear comments from folks in your past nearly as much as you fear the comments that are likely to come from my mouth at any given moment? can you? ha!
